Whitewater Parenting

As a young kid I saw my parents as invincible super heroes to which no problem was unsolvable, no challenge too great and no situation ever out of their control.

As a parent I realise as I doubt ever decision, struggle over every obstacle and worry about the effect of events and influences on our family that just as I am a regular person so too are my parents. We do the best we can - no more, no less.

Happy Father's Day.

Crackle

:( our phone line has developed a problem and there is an extremely bad crackling noise on it. If you are trying to contact us then mobiles are the best bet since voice is unintelligible.

Surprisingly, ADSL is still syncing albeit at 1-3M rather than the usual 8M, with SNR down to 4-8 instead of around 15dB. It's funny that you can't make a telephone call but can get better than dial up speeds. Plenty of packet loss too meaning our 'net is extremely flakey.

This morning I isolated all our phone equipment to make sure the fault wasn't on our premises so I'm sure of that.

Our phone provider is Exetel, who are reselling an Optus Wire Line service, of which the 'last mile' is owned and managed by Tel$tra. This means I don't have high hopes of it getting fixed anytime soon - I can only hope that someone else in the street has the same problem and is a Tel$tra customer and that our line gets fixed at the same time. In any case a fault has been logged with Exetel and we'll see what happens...

Oh Yeah!

I've found the motivation to sit down at the puter and type stuff again! Well, when I'm not doing work or kung fu related admin or playing games, not that I've been gaming at all really. Time to crack out the calendar and see if I actually did anything worthwhile in the last few weeks *ahem* months...

The Rest of May

Righto list time because I can't really order thoughts at the moment to construct paragraphs:

Right that's May done :)

June

List time, because it's all a blur:

The rest of the month I barely remember but I think it was otherwise uneventful. Annie had got back to getting up in the middle of the night for food so there wasn't much quality sleep happening.

July

Wow there is writing all over the calendar:

Well I think that's all for now, I really need to get this out before it becomes August :). Stay tuned as in the next few days I promise to bore you with (one of) my to do lists.

Hihi

Well, I haven't felt like writing lately, in fact I haven't felt like doing much really. I could just write that this month was roughly the same as last month with slightly different things on slightly different dates. But I guess I should put in the effort...

The Good

My little monkey-man turned 4! He's been waiting for so long and so patiently, as have his invited guests (his friends, some random people at the shopping centre, the cockroach, the bit of fluff in the laundry etc). His party was at Playdays Barrack Heights and he played soccer with his friends. It was quite amusing watching 3-6 year olds running around with the co-ordinater trying in vain to keep it organised. They had fun and got to burn off some steam. Cassandra made sure there was plenty of healthy food. She blogged about the cake which was a James Tank Engine - he really liked it and still talks about it.

Alz turned 30 as well and we went to his party. Callum struggled a bit to fit in with the older kids at the party but it was a good social interaction opportunity for him. I saw Alastair's mum for the first time in like 500 years. It was quite weird bringing the family along as I can still remember quite clearly the days spent at Alz's place during our school years. I don't think it would have occurred to me all those years ago that I would be bringing my wife, 4 year old and 4 month old to his 30th, to meet Narelle for the first time.

The girls turned various twenty-somethings and we went out to Hog's Breath for dinner to celebrate and cash in their free steaks for the boys. Callum loves the curly fries there (it's the only place he'll eat chips). Annabelle has been quiet and content in her stroller there too, so it makes it a little less stressful than a normal going out event.

G&J had their engagement party at the Aviator restaurant at Albion Park. It was a good day except Mum flaked out with a weak excuse and Dad had a migraine. Amanda couldn't make it due to it being too soon after her coming back from overseas. Aunty Josie and Uncle Peter were too unwell to travel up, and Grandma couldn't make it either has Teo had to get some medical tests done. So the numbers on the King/Andonov side were a little thin but at least we were there with Dad on behalf of, well, everyone.

They had this amazing cake thing that was basically sugar holding form. At first glance I was dissapointed with the size of my allocated portion but by the end of it my belly was begging for mercy! Mmmmmnnn argle argle. Oh, and Grant asked me to be one of "The Dudes" at the wedding so that will be cool!

Isaac had his 4th birthday party at Tiger's Putt-Putt which for Callum was just about the best day ever save for his own party. He had heaps of fun and got his face painted like a tiger. It's nice to see him when he is happy.

We had Evan, Jo and Bethany over for dinner the other night, which was a great excuse for Rebecca's chicken and mushroom pie to make an appearance Mmmmmnnn argle argle. It was nice to catch up as I'd been slack with the Evan lunches lately and hadn't seen Bethany for a while. She seems OK, and they seem OK, which is about the best we can hope for.

For Mother's day, we saw my mum on the Saturday for afternoon tea along with G&J. On the actual Mother's day, we gave Cassandra the presents she'd bought on my behalf knowing I wouldn't get time to do it and we made her pancakes for breakfast. Annie fountained spew over me and the lounge in the morning, which set the day off to a funny start. She then hit Cassandra with spew later that day. We were pretty tired after doing the Gramps/Nan->Granny/Pete run so had an easy dinner and put the rest of Mother's day behind us.

We won some BF2.

The Bad

I've been working weekends a fair bit lately, not for long periods at a time but enough that it has been disruptive on the family. At least I got last Monday off in-lieu to spend with the family. Callum and Annabelle responded well to seeing me for a 'long' weekend (even though I worked for bits of the first two days of it). I kinda need a holiday but I realise it's not even been 3 months since I had a whole month off.

Work wise our company lost a few big contracts which means what I do will be going away in some unknown time-frame (months to years, who knows). We'll need to find new work to justify the amount of staff we have in Wollongong.

Kung Fu attendance has been pretty poor on my behalf and we aren't getting many people to classes anymore. It's really just a Looch/me/Tammy/Justin affair with the PCYC kids. We've spent some time and launched two new six week beginners classes - one for women only and another for everyone. If you are interested in self defence or martial arts in Wollongong then then you really should check us out.

We lost some BF2.

The Ugly

Well, Cassandra was nice enough to cut mine and the boy's hair so at least I don't look like I've been beaten with the ugly stick (just poked a lot). Doing the clippers at home thing is saving us a bucket load of cash in hair dressing fees. Simple things can make a difference.

I find myself increasingly interested in the financial news. I was enjoying watching the news about the latest federal budget tonight which is quite sad really. I've even been enjoying listening to ABC local radio instead of TripleJ. How sad is that? Maybe it's a turning 30 thing, or maybe the timing is coincidence, but I think it's possible I might be a big boy now. Oh can't anyone save me from middle-agedness?

Brain Dump

So, 'what have I been doing for the last month?' I find myself asking... Well, there was the usual birthday run: Evan (Hog's breath steaks :) mmmm) and Garth (Angelina's Pizzas :) mmmm). Apart from that it was really just life as usual. I'd like to be able to say that something new and exciting happened, but unfortunately it didn't.

I've wasted plenty of time playing Frontlines at night, and with Callum there's been plenty of Peggle and Trackmania. I think he's computer addicted but for now that's OK, as it has been a really hectic month. His reading is coming along well - he can read plenty of words and he is enjoying stories at night. First he gets one read to him and then he gets to read it by himself (i.e. with help). His math skills are good too, he gets the idea of addition and surprisingly subtraction. Sport-wise he loves playing backyard cricket and indoor golf. He'll be 4 next week so we're busy planning for that.

Annabelle is doing her usual thing. We've started her on stewed apples that Cassandra made - she can't get enough of it! She loves sucking on food, toys, fingers etc - anything that is about. Quite different to how Callum was. She takes a real interest in our food, watching it intently from plate to mouth.

I put my own photo on my blog, but I think it looks kinda stupid so I might remove it (or at least rotate it so I am upright). After all, I know what I look like.

Easter happened during March, we (Callum) got a ton of chocolate, which he doesn't really eat much of but likes to know is his. He keeps count of what he has so he would know if any went missing - damn!

Work has been meh - not much new happening, other than the company losing work to other major IT outsourcers and internal shuffles and more off-shoring. I've had a chance to fix up some things that were broken for a long time and in doing so, found more things that need fixing.

Oh yeah, I sprained my ankle again. I was fixing the laundry fly-screen on Easter Monday and though I'd take a shortcut off the back steps. Anyways I was wearing thongs and something went horribly wrong somewhere and I took a tumble. The inner side of the ankle is still sore, but the compression bandage is helping. Plenty of ice and Difflam cream helped too. Oh well, back to strengthening it up again, just when I was looking forward to getting back into training. At least there are no Lion Dances in the short term.

Tools of the Trade

I thought I'd make a list of the software I regularly use - at least on a daily basis. It will be interesting to look back on this list in a few years and see how things change.

"Free as in Speech Software"

My main server is a AMD AthlonXP 2800+, which used to be my main desktop. In fact, my main server has always been my main desktop in a former life - slightly out of date but well specced for what it needs to do. Anyway, it's called "pug" an it runs Linux. To be specific, it runs Debian. Years ago it ran Red-Hat 4, then 7, after which time I got sick of where Red-Hat was headed. Debian is a great platform because the "stable" branch is always stable, while the "testing" branch contains the newer software. I generally run with stable, but with a few packages from testing where I need the newer version for features. Upgrades to new releases don't require you to go through some whacky CD installation procedure but rather "just work" with minimal fuss. There are a myriad of packages for Debian, probably more so than any other distro (excluding Debian derivatives like Ubuntu).

I connect to pug with OpenSSH because it is secure. I have tons of port forwards, reverse port forwards, and also make extensive use of it's inbuilt SOCKS proxy. Tunnels everywhere. I manage a few connections with autossh. It's cool to find a piece of software that fits your needs just as you'd imagined it would need to. I also use the keychain script which is another bit of code I was going to write but found already existed better than I imagined it.

I use screen for all my login shells meaning I can always reconnect and keep working where I left off. I don't know how people can admin systems without it. At home I keep an IRC session running, my mail open and a tail of several log files. At work I keep open connections to frequently used systems, and mailboxes. I use less as my pager because well, less is more but better.

I read all my personal email with Mutt because it is much quicker than GUI equivalents and means I can access it from anywhere and it is fast. On rare occasions I'll use Mozilla Thunderbird from my desktop or work machine if I want to view graphical attachments.

I run my own SMTP email server using Exim4 along with Spamassassin to keep my inbox somewhat clean. I reject probable spam at SMTP time and regularly report spam to Vipul's Razor. I also use Courier-IMAP so that I can access my mail with Thunderbird (and so that Cass can access her email too).

I use Pidgin for Instant Messaging (MSN, Jabber/XMPP, and Sametime) and have used it since it was Gaim v0.7. Pidgin is another piece of software that "just works" does what it needs to do in a clean way and does it well. For IRC, when not using Pidgin I'm always logged in on pug with irssi which is pretty cool software, if only for the fact you can upgrade the software without losing your IRC connections!

I use rsync a lot, since discovering it a few years ago at work, for just about everything. This includes copying, backup and remote backup of critical files. At work it is invaluable for copying databases etc. across slow pipes. At home it is invaluable because BackupPC, the software I use to backup all my machines is based on it. BackupPC lets me efficiently keep a second copy of all my data and automates backups so that I hardly ever need to intervene. Incidently, I run it on "baky" which is my desktop-2, server-1th class of hardware, again running Debian.

When I need to write stuff, it's usually in Perl5 because I like it so much. I find it much easier to get small things done in Perl than C or C++, and it lives on every old box at work. I took a look at Python but never liked the idea that it was whitespace dependent (I've used computers for 20 years so it's hard to break old habits, such as the whitespace is unimportant mantra). I also don't really see anything it adds over Perl. The fact that it is harder to get running on older unices (because it is younger) means it is less important to me. However some of the software I really like is written in Python.

For even simpler stuff and day to day use, I use ksh because when I started UNIX at work, the dinosaurs rightly pointed out that ksh is the most standard and can be found on just about any UNIX system. Besides, csh sucks hard. For editing I use vi or vim if available because again, the dinosaurs rightly pointed out that if you can vi you can do anything! (incidently I used to use MicroEmacs on the Amiga - yuck!)

I've started using Mercurial for revision control (I used to use plain old RCS). Mercurial happens to be written in Python and I chose it because it looks nicer than git and the documentation is well written. I didn't like the monotone database idea and am scared of anything written in Haskell like Darcs.

sheesh this is going to be long... have you fallen asleep yet?

Teh Interweb2.n

I look after a few websites and have built a few Internet Commerce sites (like when Cass started Scrap Pile or when I recently did Country Scrapbooking's website. My web server of choice is Apache2 because well, it's the best and most available (apparently lighttpd is good for performance but that's not a concern I have).

We picked Zen-Cart because I'd tried Os-commerce and found it lacking. Luckily Zen-Cart went in the right direction and did pretty much everything needed right out of the box. Customising the templates to look nice is the hardest part because I'm not really great at graphical web design.

I use the e107 cms for the Southern Crane web site, having proven itself on the old .:sGc:. clan website and then again for the Team Phoenix web site. Again it does everything right out of the box and I've even written a few plug-ins for the TP site (which I will host the source for via Mercurial hgwebdir soon).

Neither Zen-Cart or e107 would exist without PHP, the Perl-like web scripting language. It trips me up sometimes when I get confused about what I can do in PHP vs. what I can do in Perl, but I guess that's because I don't do PHP very frequently. One of the e107 plug-ins I mentioned earlier is written in PHP and also a lot of tinkering is done inside Zen Cart. (OK, Zen-Cart and e107 would probably exist without PHP, they would just be written in many more lines of Perl.)

Neither Zen-Cart or e107 would exist without MySQL as the database engine. (OK, they would exist, just using Postgres ;) ). I got into MySQL when one of the Battlefield 1942 stats tracking bits of software used it (years ago, when I admin-ed a BF1942 server for Swiftel). Since then it's popped up just about everywhere - we use it a lot at work, especially for our wiki. I used to be scared of databases (strange I know since we use Oracle and DB2 at work) but MySQL becoming popular has helped remove some of that fear.

still awake?...

The web sites I've done have used both Coppermine and Gallery2.0. Coppermine is good because it integrated well with phpbb which I've used for forums, and with zen cart, but Gallery has much nicer default themes and presentation.

This blog is run on Pyblosxom because I really liked the idea of flat file storage, so looked at blosxom (written in Perl) but found it not as well maintained or supported as Pyblosxom (written in Python). So the choice was easy and I'm really happy with it. I don't need to worry about any special backups or losing it if some corporation suddenly disappears or changes it's mind.

Desktop, or, Not Free as in $$$

Now that you have fallen asleep I can admit to using WindowsXP on my Desktop machine aka. "Teapot". I only do it because the games I'm addicted to: BF1942, BF2, and Frontlines: Fuel of War are Windows only (well, they will run on wine/cedega but as soon as you play online/multi-player you will get kicked because of Punkbuster (anti-cheat) which expects you are running on Windows). I also used Windows95 before I saw the light and we have always used it at work, so it's something I'm familiar with. Now that Cass has her own laptop I will eventually dual-boot and use Debian primarily, and Windows for my gaming fix.

So being stuck with Winblows, I make the most of it. I would be lost without Cygwin, which surprisingly has extremely up to date ports of UNIX software for Windows. I especially use rxvt for terminal emulation (including a "dos-box" aka. "command-prompt"). Cygwin is the only real way to get OpenSSH and Rsyncd running well on Windows (for BackupPC remember, and general remote access). Thankfully, Cygwin and all it's packages are truly free.

Web browser wise the choice is simple: Firefox. I've used it since it was called Netscape Navigator, then Mozilla, then, Phoenix, then Firebird etc. I hate using IE... hate hate hate. I've used Lynx when in text mode and to get out of trouble, and also wget, but nothing beats a telnet to port 80 ;)

At work we need to use MS Office but at home I use Open Office which does everything I need it to. It's cool that OO is now good enough to be a complete replacement for home users. Now for their open format to become standard...

I pretty much live with one or more Putty sessions open, either to work boxes or to pug. It's so much easier to do things in a terminal window and Putty does it well. Over time just about every feature I've wanted and even some I didn't know I needed have made it in to Putty. I also use pagent to manage my in memory ssh keys. If I was stuck on a deserted island with only one piece of software with me I would want it to be Putty.

For remote access, I use TightVNC server and viewer because it suits my needs best. It's pretty reliable and seems to be the best performing and most compatible.

Free, But Closed Source

Lastly, I do use some free software under windows that is closed source. Firstly there is Metapad which is a lightweight notepad replacement, which I have been using for years. Next is PSPad which is a great IDE/editor for windows. I use it because it is fast. Maybe I should ditch both and use vim? nah.

Daemon Tools is useful, but I could live without it. I use it so that I don't need to bother with having the game CD/DVD's in the drive because they will get wrecked by little fingers.

For anti-virus I use AVG because if you run Windows then you need anti-virus. I should try Clamwin one day.

For graphics I use the GIMP because it is open source, but I do admit to using Photo$hop when I get frustrated with not knowing or not being able to do something in the GIMP. I should be strong but sometimes the GIMP is just painful. I've used Inkscape for vector graphics before, but when Greg did the Southern Crane logo in Corel Draw I borrowed a copy and installed it and admittedly it is quite good. I really should learn more Gimp-Fu.

That's all for now, if you've made it this far then you are indeed a sad person. Like I said at the start, this is the software I use on a mostly daily basis. It's all stuff that I'm happy with and comfortable using, but like everything software will evolve, there will be new things, and some old things will still remain.

Gallery of Annabelle

I've started a small Gallery because people kept bugging me for photos.

Back ... for now ...

OK I'm back, I think - it's been a while. I just haven't been in the mood. I think it's returning to me...

Firstly you have learnt an important lesson about me. Perhaps I should add a disclaimer somewhere: "* promises may not be honoured". Secondly you can gather that I'm (as of time of writing) still alive.

Holiday in Review

Well my entire-month-of-February-plus-a-day holiday went really well. Here are some of the things I got done:

Fun with Callum, whom I had all to myself for 4 days when Cass went to Melbourne with Annie to visit Susan:

All in all we had a really good boy's weekend.

Thirty

Oh yeah, I had a birthday in there. Massive party, no-one was invited :p. Actually, had a nice quiet dinner at home with my loved ones. Had a much quieter one once the little ones went to bed. I got FFOW for my birthday from Cass, Callum and Annie. From Katy I got edible chocolate Cluedo, which I am debating about whether or not to actually play it with other people or play it by myself. From my parents I got a nice lamp and a globe for it and a camping billie, to use when I uh, go... umm, camping. I got one hundred big ones from Mum and Pete (and a birthday dinner at the club) so that will go towards computer bits. My friends gave me a hammock and a stand for it so that I can relax in the backyard.

All in all I didn't find 30 to be much different from 29, which, incidently I didn't find too different to 28. The numbers have lost their importance for me, much the same way as Christmas is a bit of "bah humbug" and Easter is just "Get Fat Day".

Lately

Annie is doing well, when not screaming for either an unknown reason (perhaps lactose intolerance is the latest thing we've considered, which we are trying to rule out), or screaming because of reflux. She smiles a lot and likes her cuddles. I've got a sore shoulder and back from holding her too much. It hurts but it's worth it.

I gave blood again yesterday - if you don't donate and you are eligible then get of your ass and do it! Ask yourself: if you were badly injured in say a car accident, would you feel entitled to another donor's blood even though you don't donate yourself? No, there aren't enough donors. Blood IS in short supply, so you NEED to do something about it if you can.

More photos with Janine. If you scroll right down you can also see a Callum-on-a-Bus. The photos achieved exactly what they were required to do.

Played a game of indoor soccer with work mates. It was a good workout and I'll try and play regularly on Wednesdays after work. I've been getting to work around 8am which is about an hour and a half earlier than normal. This gives me more time at home at the end of the day and it feels like more time overall.

Went to Wings over Illawarra with the Hunter's. Callum had a good time but there wasn't as much to see as at the Nowra air show we went to.

I've started trying to exercise more, and am incorporating a walk to Westfield Figtree once a week. It takes me about 17mins there and 17-20mins back. The first time I went I realised I needed to bring a hat and put on sunscreen, and that my work boots aren't ideal walking shoes. The second time (today) I realised that I really really do need better shoes.

Tonight I carried Callum up from the car asleep as he had got back late from Granny's. I used to love it when my parents carried me in to bed from the car at night, but I'm enjoying it even more being the parent. Sometimes he wakes up a bit (he is heavy now after all) but sometimes I can change him out of his clothes into his pyjamas without him waking up.

Till next time...

Still Here

Yes, I'm still here. Long time no blog. I kinda lost my mojo but I think it's coming back.

Let's see what happened during the remainder of January and this first week of February...

Family Photos

In there we had some family photos taken by Janine which turned out really well. All I remember from that day was being really tired which is a curse of mine on photo days. My dodgy narrow eyes meant that Janine needed to come back another day to take some more shots to make me look normal. I'm really happy with the way they turned out as they really capture the personalities in our family.

Katy came to visit

Catching up with friends always makes me realise just how little time I do devote to staying in touch. With Katy visiting came the promise to also take time to go and visit her on my holidays which should be good. Now to actually organise it (mental note get Cassandra to organise it or I will forget). That day made opened my eyes to the fact that some people I think I know aren't actually the people I think they are, which means I don't actually know what or who they are. I would have said I was pretty good at pegging someone's personality after only spending a minute or two with them but now I think this is actually quite naive. It was good to catch up and I'm looking forward to the next visit which _should_ be soon, so that I can find out what new adventures she is looking forward to.

Amanda visit

Umm, Amanda came to visit in there too on her way back from Lord Howe island. I sent with her $50 and an express post satchel for her to buy me some Genovese coffee from Melbourne which I received the other day - yum yum! Duh only now do I realise that you can buy it online and they have a Sydney store. Ahh the power of the internets. She has moved in with Patrick and all is going well.

Lion Dance Season

Yes it is that that time of the year meaning lots of lion dances. We had a wedding a few weeks ago, and we also did the Illawarra/Bulli Folk Festival. Tomorrow we have Oriental Expressions at lunch time (and also Sunday lunch time) and King's Restaurant in the evening. I think I might strap my ankle just in case because it still hasn't healed properly from when I sprained it last April-ish. I really should put some time into the Southern Crane Website as it hasn't been updated since last lion dance season. I should also post here a video of one of our performances too.

Holidays

I asked for and received the whole of February off of work. I took just over a week of annual leave to cover Friday the 1st of Feb, and the 3rd of March (the day after what will hopefully be my 30th birthday). In there was 3 weeks of long service which means I have another 7 to take! Woohoo!. The first week off has been great and I am really enjoying spending time at home with Cassandra and the kids. I'm also getting started on my perpetual list of things to do (which Cassandra has merged into an Open Office spreadsheet for us to track our progress and keep me honest.

So far I've set up her mum's new computer (put together and Athlon X2 miniATX system from pieces for her with WinXP) which worked out a lot cheaper for her than buying a pre-built system. I've also cleaned out my side of the kitchen cupboard and installed new shelves for Cassandra to move her scrap-booking stuff into, with the long term goal of moving everything out of the study to be Annie's room. I've setup backuppc backups of Cassandra's new Dell laptop which including stuffing around trying to get cygwin rsyncd to run under vista but I finally got there.

I've also chucked out all the jewel cases of my music CDs and put them in a big CD wallet binder thingy along with the album art. This should save a fair bit of space and also improve the random seek times of my music collection. One day they will all be mp3 or ogg'ified.

I spent a few hours the other night fixing up the GameArena BF2 IRC match bot to include the custom maps used by GA. One day I'll tidy up the scripts I wrote to extract the information and put them up somewhere.

Precious Beth

The most painful news: my closest friend found out that their baby Bethany was born with Lissencephaly. She is 3 months old and in all likelihood stay at that mental age for the rest of her life, which will not be a full one. On their page you can find out more about the condition if you so wish. The first few days I felt absolute sorrow for her, but now I realise that she is not the one to feel sorry for, as she will never no any different and unlikely to feel any pain. It is her parents that I will always be sad for. There is nothing that can be done to help other than to continue to extend any and all support and help that they are willing to accept. It makes me feel so lucky that our two kids are happy and healthy and no matter how hard it is with them I know they have a good life. In our minds Annie was supposed to grow up with Bethany and we had grand plans of play-dates. Before they were both born I even joked about how we could "race" them (being only six weeks apart) and now that thought will haunt me for ever. Annie will be a constant reminder of what my friends are so close to having but not able to have. I promise I will never take life for granted ever again.

Grant and Jenna Engaged!

Happy news! I'm getting an official sister-in-law! Congratulations to my nerdy brother and his nerdy fiance who are perfect for each other. May you live long and prosper together (or whatever the Star Wars/Transformers/LOtR/Dr. Who equivalent saying is).

Callum's First Day of Pre-School

Number 1 started pre-school this week. We moved him because we can get 3 days of pre-school-at-a-primary-school for the same price as 1 day of his day-care. The teacher thinks he's bright and switched on, which is because we always read to him and taught him his letters from a very early age. The teacher said he was able to point out to a little girl her name badge when she couldn't recognise her own name herself. I think this is just bad parenting on her parents behalf, placing an unnecessary burden on our already under funded public school system. If there is one thing that I wish this new government could possibly get right is their promise to improve education (though I'm not getting my hopes up). Maybe Callum can teach them a thing or two.

OK, enough, bed time for me. Promise to self to blog again within a week... ish.

You can also do a query on a single channel.

Now to IRC-bot-ify the thing so people in the Team Phoenix IRC channel can query TS whenever they like. Will post the code soon-ish.

One Month In

So it's been a while since my last post, mostly because I have enjoyed a bit of time away from thinking about myself too much. A few things have happened in the last month, I guess I should recap:

New Years

New year's eve was pretty quiet - we had planned to go to Grant and Jenna's place but due to several factors including not having established a routine with Annabelle, it was post-poned. Instead we stayed home and tried to sleep. This proved to be difficult due to a noisy night in the neighbourhood (not unexpected though).

It's 2008, I haven't made any plans for the new year. It's going to be business as usual for the foreseeable future, but I do have some short term goals:

  1. Lose some weight - xmas and lack of training have made me fatty fat fat fat and very sluggish.
  2. Regain some fitness - see above, It's still in there, but I need a lot of cardio work to get back where I was - the current plan is running or bike riding - now to find the time... No doubt lion dance season will help.
  3. Promote the PCYC Thursday night class - build it up rather than stagnating due to the status quo.

January

Well, it's been hard trying to work out Annabelle - she's so different to Callum as a baby (as far as I can remember). She cries a lot, and she's always hungry. She can stay awake from 6-8hrs at a time and can also sleep for up to 6hrs at night (so I guess it evens itself out?).

This week

This week has been good. The weekend was spent running around as usual. Saturday night was the post-poned New Year's Eve celebration at Grant and Jenna's. The usual crowd (Alz, Garth, Rebecca) and also Looch, Tim and erm someone else. Twas a good evening with Callum teaching everyone how to play backyard cricket, a nice BBQ and chocolate cake. Annie got restless before it got dark so we were the first to leave. It was a car load of very tired people.

Sunday we visited my parents and then the Hunters afterwards. We ended up staying for dinner as Brad wasn't sure if were were or not. We had barbecued lamb which went down well with everyone. Callum played with Ben and Alannah and again tired himself out. By the time we got home both kids and both parents were over-tired. Although we made the most of our weekend we were about to start the week being behind on sleep, which is never fun.

BF2 wise we've won a few games recently. I even played a game with Annie strapped to my front in the Baby Bjorn which was I guess not chiropractic-ally approved, but fun none the less! She sleeps well in that thing due to being pressed up near a heartbeat - it must feel warm and safe.

I got back to training on Tuesday night and gave my heart a good shake into gear. I felt so much better after training since I'd done basically nothing for a month. A shower and a shave and some food afterwards and with both kids asleep, that's about as good as it gets.

Well, I had plenty more to write, but this will have to do since I'll never finish at this rate!
